The brave hikers are two suburban families. The families have no walking experience. Well, not nothing. The parents used to hike before they had children, but not since. As families we have hiked short day routes, but we have never done multiday hikes with backpacks. Both families have a mom and dad, a 9/10 year old boy and a 7 year old child – one a girl and one a boy. The parents do not want to disclose their ages, but the average is probably around 40.
Mom had the idea to walk from Port Edward to Kosi Bay. She sometimes has funny ideas. Dad liked the idea and told his friend. The friend was inspired, intrigued and fired up. Without him this might have stayed just a very nice idea. The friend started planning routes and strategies. Within a week of telling him we met on the first beach for the first hike. We need to mention that this friend is not an average Joe like the rest of us. He has done the Comrades marathon and the Dusi Cano Marathon in the past; more than once.
(And as a site note: The average Joe Dad is pretty good with Google Maps and in charge of mapping our progress and placing the route maps on the blog. He also makes sure we know where we are while hiking and can find our vehicle at the end.)
